Gill and Adelaide

This morning we had a visit from a lady called Gill who is blind and her guide dog Adelaide. Gill talked to the children about how Adelaide is trained and what she does to help Gill. She told the children how Adelaide has to follow certain commands to help Gill when they are out walking. Gill also showed the children different gadgets she uses to help her and they looked at some books that had braille in them.

The children listened well and were lucky enough to give Adelaide a stroke – the children were told of the importance of not interacting with a guide dog when they have their harness on due to distracting her.

We welcomed Tony from Holt Fire Station into school to speak with the children about fire safety. Tony started off by asking the children if they could identify bad/good fires and discussed the dangers associated with potential fire hazards such as barbecues, matches, gas hobs. Tony then spoke about his role, showed the children the uniform he wears, and discussed the different types of rescue that the fire engine would have to attend such as floods, animal rescue and car accidents. Tony discussed ‘STOP, DROP and ROLL’ and taught the children what to do should their clothes catch alight. He also spoke about the dangers of smoke, showed the children and sounded a fire alarm and discussed the importance of fire exit plans.

Lizzie, a Community Nurse, came to visit the children as a real life ‘superhero’ to talk all about her role. Lizzie showed the children a video and explained what her role entails, listing the different things that she does. Lizzie showed the children the different equipment that she uses within her role and let the children listen to her heart with a stethoscope. The children then had the opportunity to use bandages and plasters to bandage one another. They had great fun and learnt a lot from her visit.

As part of our collaboration with the National Trust, Eleanor from the Blakeney National Trust, came to visit and completed activities with the children. Eleanor brought in her friendly mantis for the children to meet and hold, some insect specimens for them to explore, and completed some craft activities with the children where they were challenged to make insects!

To celebrate Christmas time, the PTFA kindly booked a trip on the North Norfolk Santa Special Railway. The whole school went arrived at Sheringham train station, headed for Holt and enjoyed some fantastic activities along the way. The children completed Santa activity packs, drank hot chocolate and ate festive gingerbread! They had entertainment from the onboard balloon artists, magician and more! On the way back, the children stopped at Weybourne where they got to meet Father Christmas. The children walked through Santa’s Grotto, seeing the Christmas tree forest, the wishing chair and meeting both the good and bad elves! The children then all met Father Christmas and received a gift from him. It was a fantastic event enjoyed by all!

We went on a trip to the Sealife Centre as we have been learning about creatures that live within the water. We had the opportunity to hold a starfish and we found out that it has two stomachs and no brain. We learnt lots of facts about sea creatures and we got to touch an anemone. As we moved through the Sealife Centre, we saw fish, otters and seals! We also got to feed the Pacu fish fruit and vegetables.
